The Somali Institute of Certified Public Accountants (SICPA) successfully convened its Second Annual Conference between 2nd and 3rd December 2024, building on the strong foundation established by its inaugural conference and further advancing its role as the national professional accountancy organization in Somalia. This second edition marked a significant step forward in institutional maturity, bringing greater depth, wider participation, and a more structured technical program to the annual gathering of the profession. Held in Mogadishu, the conference brought together a broad range of stakeholders, including senior government officials, regulators, professional accountants, audit practitioners, private sector leaders, academics, and international development partners. The event demonstrated growing recognition of SICPA as a central platform for dialogue on financial governance, professional standards, and economic development in Somalia. The conference focused on strengthening the contribution of the accountancy profession to national development, with particular emphasis on improving public financial management, enhancing audit quality, and accelerating the adoption and implementation of international standards such as IFRS, ISA, and IPSAS. Discussions also explored emerging priorities, including digital transformation in the profession, strengthening regulatory and quality assurance frameworks, and addressing capacity gaps through structured education and continuous professional development programs. A key feature of the Second Annual Conference was the increased level of engagement from both the public and private sectors, reflecting a growing appreciation of the role of accountants in promoting transparency, accountability, and investor confidence. The conference provided a platform for sharing practical experiences, identifying challenges, and proposing solutions tailored to the Somali context, particularly in areas such as compliance, financial reporting, and institutional strengthening. The event also reinforced SICPA’s strategic direction, highlighting its ongoing efforts to build a sustainable and credible professional body aligned with international best practices and the IFAC Statements of Membership Obligations. It contributed to strengthening partnerships with regional and international organizations, while also positioning SICPA as a key stakeholder in Somalia’s economic reform agenda. The Second Annual Conference further institutionalized SICPA’s annual conference series as a flagship event for the profession. It not only strengthened professional networks and collaboration but also helped to shape the policy and reform discourse in the country. As SICPA continues to grow, the conference series remains an important platform for driving progress, enhancing professional capacity, and supporting Somalia’s journey toward stronger financial governance and economic resilience.
