The Somali Institute of Certified Public Accountants (SICPA) successfully convened its First Annual Conference in June 2022, marking a foundational milestone in the formal development of the accountancy profession in Somalia. Held on 20–21 June 2022 in Mogadishu as part of a broader national economic forum, the conference was organized under the theme “Economic Resilience.” This inaugural event represented the first major national platform led by SICPA to bring together key stakeholders and position the profession at the center of Somalia’s economic reform agenda. The conference attracted a diverse and high-level audience, including representatives from government institutions such as the Ministry of Finance and regulatory bodies, professional accountants and auditors, private sector leaders, academic institutions, and development partners. The gathering provided a unique opportunity for dialogue between public and private sector actors, fostering collaboration and shared understanding on the role of accountancy in strengthening financial governance and supporting economic recovery. Discussions during the conference focused on critical areas essential to Somalia’s development, including strengthening public financial management systems, enhancing professional standards and regulatory frameworks, and promoting the adoption of international accounting and auditing standards such as IFRS and ISA. Particular emphasis was placed on building the capacity of Somali accountants, developing sustainable professional education pathways, and reinforcing the importance of transparency, accountability, and trust in financial reporting across both public and private sectors. The significance of the First Annual Conference extends beyond the event itself. It firmly established SICPA as the emerging national professional accountancy organization (PAO), capable of convening stakeholders and contributing meaningfully to policy dialogue and institutional reform. The conference also laid the groundwork for continuous professional engagement through future annual conferences, creating a platform for knowledge sharing, policy discussion, and professional development. Importantly, the conference contributed to raising awareness of the critical role that a strong accountancy profession plays in economic resilience, governance, and investor confidence. It helped initiate momentum toward the professionalization of the sector, strengthened networks among practitioners and institutions, and aligned national efforts with international best practices. Building on the success of this inaugural event, SICPA has continued to institutionalize its conference series, with subsequent conferences expanding in scope, participation, and technical depth. The First Annual Conference therefore stands as a landmark moment in SICPA’s journey, reflecting its commitment to advancing the profession and supporting Somalia’s broader economic development and reform priorities.
